When you’re not hosting barbecues and watering your plants, use your backyard as the perfect spot to work out! If you’re tired of the same indoor workout routines, try getting in your cardio and strength training surrounded by the sounds of nature. No need to drive out to a gym or redesign a room in your home—here are seven creative ways to work out right in your backyard.

1. Set Up a Yoga Practice Space

Practicing yoga is a great way to improve your flexibility and clear your mind, so roll out your yoga mat on a flat area of your lawn or patio and get into the flow. With the calming sounds of birds chirping outside and the gentle breeze in the wind, you’ll feel cool and collected during your yoga sessions. To decorate the space, add a few potted plants nearby and play a guided meditation on a speaker for a relaxing ambiance.

2. Create a Circuit Using Outdoor Furniture

Incorporate your outdoor furniture into your daily workout sessions. For example, you can use your garden bench for tricep dips or step-ups, and grab a sturdy chair for squats. Add some push-ups on the lawn in between, and you have yourself a full-body circuit you can complete right at home!

3. Take Advantage of a Jump Rope

If you loved to jump rope as a kid, bring it out during your outdoor workout session! These toys can create a full-body cardio workout that improves coordination and endurance. Find an open area in your backyard to practice jumping rope and challenge yourself with different techniques like crisscrosses or single-leg jumps for extra intensity.

4. Introduce Backyard Sprints

Sprint drills add high-intensity intervals to your routine. If you have a spacious area, map out a sprint zone across your lawn or create a zig-zag course around the yard. Running short bursts is great for boosting your metabolism and improving overall fitness, so bring an energetic vibe to your workout and blast your favorite pump-up playlist in your headphones during your backyard sprints.

5. Try Functional Gardening Exercises

Gardening is a fun hobby that doubles as a creative way to work out in your backyard. Lifting bags of soil, pulling weeds, or raking leaves targets your upper body and core, and squatting to plant flowers activates your legs. Best of all, your backyard will look great once you finish!

6. Play Fetch for Cardio

If the doggy door is open, invite your pup to your workout sessions in your backyard! Get your cardio in by playing an active game of fetch or chasing each other in the backyard as a workout you can do with your dog. This way, both you and your furry friend can explore the outdoors and let out some energy in a fun, fulfilling way.

7. Host Outdoor Bodyweight Workouts

Invite friends or family to join you for a backyard HIIT session or bodyweight workout. Exercises like push-ups, squats, burpees, and planks require no equipment, which makes this an easy option for group workouts. If you have efficient outdoor lighting in your backyard, you can even host an evening session to beat the heat and add a unique twist to your fitness routine.

Before you start your routine workout outside, be mindful of the temperature and look out for any rain clouds in the sky. If the sun is beating down on your patio, make sure to apply a thick layer of sunscreen to protect your skin from any burns. With these tips in mind, you’ll be able to complete a healthy and motivating workout that’ll energize you for the rest of the day!
