Looking to level up your fitness? Perhaps it’s time to try a new style of workout class. Burn Boot Camp and Crossfit are both popular workout options, but which is better? Below we look at how the classes work, the benefits of them, and some observations of each.

What is Burn Boot Camp?

Burn Boot Camp is a 45-minute instructor-led workout class, that runs Monday to Saturday. The workouts are designed to help you improve overall fitness, with a focus on cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance and strength, and flexibility. In every class, each student is encouraged to try their best and push their body to its limits. Classes offer modifications for each exercise so both beginners and experienced boot camp attendees get a good workout.

What is Crossfit?

Crossfit is a structured workout class, hosted by affiliates of the licensed program. These workouts are challenging and offer a new level of competitiveness. Crossfit workouts combine a wide variety of exercises to offer a full-body workout. Exercises include running, weightlifting, body weight exercises, plyometrics, jumping rope, calisthenics, and powerlifting. Each person receives a score based on how fast they can complete the set workout schedule.

How do classes work?

Knowing how a class runs can help to take away some of the apprehension that comes with trying something new. Below is a quick rundown of how each class runs and what to expect.

Burn Boot Camp

A Burn Boot Camp class runs 45 minutes from start to finish, meaning you can be in and out within an hour. Class begins with a warm-up using active dynamic exercises like push-ups, running, lunges, and jumping jacks. Toward the end of the warm-up, your instructor will explain the circuit for the class. Workouts change focus depending on the day of the week, so check the schedule. The focus will be full body strength and conditioning, upper body strength, lower body strength, core strength and conditioning, bodyweight conditioning, and metabolic conditioning. You will then spend 35 minutes performing the circuit of exercises, before heading into a finisher. The finisher is a final 5-minute push designed to test your body and is often the most difficult part of the class. Finishers usually include plyometric exercises, sprints, or isometric holds.


A Crossfit class runs for around an hour. Classes begin with a warmup of light cardio, mobility work, and stretches to activate muscles. After the warm-up, you will head into the strength part of the class. Here you will perform various strength lifts like front and back squats, bench presses, deadlifts, and more. As a beginner, you will have an instructor leading you through the lifts to ensure you have proper form and movements. Experienced participants are generally left on their own. After the strength session comes the workout of the day. This changes depending on the class and could focus on conditioning, balance, agility, anaerobic power, or endurance. This section is also referred to as the HITT section. At the end of your class, the instructor will lead you through a cool down, which incorporates breathing exercises and stretches. Some instructors will also use foam rollers during the cool-down.

Both classes offer great training programs designed to test your body and mind. When it comes to results, both work to help you lose weight and gain strength, especially when combined with a healthy diet. However, when it comes to which is better, it may depend on your personality and what drives you. This is because the environment at Burn Boot Camp vs Crossfit is very different. At Burn Boot Camp there is a huge emphasis on personal gains and encouragement whereas Crossfit is much more competitive and ranks participants against each other.
